The companies of S&P 500 emitted the total of 1,516,765 Kt in GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2) for the last reporting period of FY2020 (or 5,546 Kt if calculated as a weighted-average). The biggest emiiters were ExxonMobil (XOM), Southern Company (SO), Duke Energy (DUK), Chevron Corp (CVX), American Electric Power (AEP).

Most companies managed to reduce their annual emissions in absolute terms compared to the previous year (coloured green on the chart below), but some major emitters (e.g. Amazon (AMZN), Ameren Corporation (AEE), Devon Energy (DVN)) did see an increase in their carbon footprint (coloured red on the chart).
