Aflac's carbon footprint

Aflac reported gross GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2 before carbon offsets) for the twelve months ending 31 December 2022 at 2.6 Kt (+0.6/+29% y-o-y). Carbon intensity also remained unchnaged at 0.1 t.

Aflac's Scope 3 emissions declined to 234 Kt (-104 /-30.8% y-o-y).

The company is committed to reducing Scope 1 + 2 by 75% by 2030 from a base year 2007, which it appears to have already achieved as of 2022. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.

Also, the company commits to achieving net zero for all Scopes by 2050, which translates into the estimated reduction of -8.5 Kt per annum over the period of FY2023 - FY2050. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
