GHG emissions and Carbon intensity
Mettler-Toledo Intl reported gross GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2 before carbon offsets) for the twelve months ending 31 December 2021 at 27 Kt (+0.91/+3.4% y-o-y). At the sime time, carbon intensity was down at 7.4 t (-1.2 /-14% y-o-y).
Mettler-Toledo Intl's Scope 3 emissions decreased to 2.5 Kt (
The company has not set a company-wide target for an absolute reduction in GHG emissions yet.
Mettler-Toledo Intl achieved carbon neutrality across its operations (Scope 1 + 2) in 2020. Companies normally become carbon neutral with the help of the acquisition of carbon offsets rather than absolute reductions in their own greenhouse emissions. Also, carbon neutrality does not include non-CO2 GHG emissions.
Mettler-Toledo Intl also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050 from a 2018 and 2019 base year respectively. Near-Term Targets Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 70% by 2030 from a 2018 base year. Mettler-Toledo International Inc.commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy related activities, upstream transportation, business travel, employee commuting, and use of sold products 30% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Long-Term Targets Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2018 base year. Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year.
