Microsoft aims to achieve net zero for all Scopes by 2030
GHG emissions and Carbon intensity
Microsoft reported gross GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2 before carbon offsets) for the twelve months ending 30 June 2021 at 288 Kt (-59 /-16.9% y-o-y). Also positively, carbon intensity tumbled to 1.7 t (-0.7 /-29.2% y-o-y).
Microsoft's Scope 3 emissions took off to 13,785 Kt (
The company is committed to achieving net zero for all Scopes by 2030, which translates into the estimated reduction of -1,564 Kt per annum over the period of FY2022 - FY2030. This science-based target is aligned with Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
The company is committed to reducing Scope 3 by 50% by 2030 from a base year 2020, which translates into the estimated reduction of -907 Kt per annum over the period of FY2022 - FY2030. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
