Primary Climate Goal
BMW aims to achieve net zero for Scope 1 + 2 by 2050
GHG emissions and Carbon intensity
BMW reported Total CO2e Emissions - Market-Based Scope 1 + Scope 2 for the twelve months ending 31 December 2022 at 785 Kt (-49 /-5.9% y-o-y). Also positively, carbon intensity decreased to 5.2 t (-1.1 /-17.5% y-o-y).
BMW's Scope 3 emissions declined to 116,587 Kt (
The company is committed to achieving net zero for Scope 1 + 2 by 2050, which translates into the estimated reduction of -28 Kt per annum over the period of FY2023 - FY2050. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
BMW also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. BMW Group commits to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 80% per vehicle produced by 2030 from a 2019 base year.* BMW Group commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from use of sold products 50% per vehicle kilometer by 2030 from a 2019 base year. BMW Group commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods & services and upstream transportation & distribution services 22%per vehicle sold by 2030 from a 2019 base year. *The target boundary includes biogenic emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks. Auto manufacturers have two near-term target temperature alignments for 1) scope 1 and 2 emissions and 2) scope 3 category 11 emissions from use of sold products.
