Rio Tinto's carbon footprint

Rio Tinto reported Total CO2e Emissions - Location-Based Scope 1 + Scope 2 for the twelve months ending 31 December 2022 at 30,300 Kt (-700 /-2.3% y-o-y). At the same time, carbon intensity was up at 545 t (+57/+12% y-o-y).

Rio Tinto's Scope 3 emissions jumped to 583,900 Kt (+25,600/+4.6% y-o-y). There has been no clear trend lately.

The company is committed to reducing Scope 1 + 2 by 50% by 2030 from a base year 2018, which translates into the estimated reduction of -1,750 Kt per annum over the period of FY2023 - FY2030. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
