Primary Climate Goal
RWE aims to achieve carbon neutrality for all Scopes by 2040
GHG emissions and Carbon intensity
RWE reported Total CO2e Emissions - Location-Based Scope 1 + Scope 2 for the twelve months ending 31 December 2022 at 92,400 Kt (+2,800/+3.1% y-o-y). At the sime time, carbon intensity decreased to 2,282 t (-796 /-25.9% y-o-y).
RWE's Scope 3 emissions decreased to 22,100 Kt (
The company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality for all Scopes by 2040, which translates into the estimated reduction of -6,361 Kt per annum over the period of FY2023 - FY2040. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
RWE aims to achive carbon neutrality across its entire value chain (all Scopes) in 2040. Companies normally become carbon neutral with the help of the acquisition of carbon offsets rather than absolute reductions in their own greenhouse emissions. Also, carbon neutrality does not include non-CO2 GHG emissions.
RWE also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. RWE AG commits to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 50% per kWh by 2030 from a 2019 base year*. RWE AG commits to reduce absolute scope 3 scopes GHG emissions 30% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.*The target boundary includes biogenic emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks as well as emissions from electricity purchased and from non-controlled assets.
