Mastercard aims to achieve net zero for Scope 1 + 2 by 2050

Mastercard's carbon footprint

Mastercard reported Total CO2e Emissions - Location-Based Scope 1 + Scope 2 for the twelve months ending 31 December 2021 at 54 Kt (-1.6 /-2.9% y-o-y). Also positively, carbon intensity was down at 2.9 t (-0.7 /-19.4% y-o-y).

Mastercard's Scope 3 emissions surged to 495 Kt (+128/+35% y-o-y). The growth accelerated relative to the long-term trend (+1% CAGR) observed since 4Q'17.

The company is committed to achieving net zero for Scope 1 + 2 by 2050, which translates into the estimated reduction of -1.9 Kt per annum over the period of FY2022 - FY2050. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.

Mastercard also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. Mastercard commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 38% by 2025 from a 2016 base year. Mastercard also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 20% over the same target period.
