CRH aims to reduce Scope 1 + 2 by 25% by 2030 from a base year 2020

CRH's carbon footprint

CRH reported Total CO2e Emissions - Location-Based Scope 1 + Scope 2 for the twelve months ending 31 December 2022 at 33,500 Kt (-2,500 /-6.9% y-o-y). Also positively, carbon intensity declined marginally to 971 t (-8.4 /-0.9% y-o-y).

CRH's Scope 3 emissions grew to 12,900 Kt (+900/+7.5% y-o-y). The growth accelerated compared to the long-term upward trend (CAGR of +5.8% since 4Q'20).

The company is committed to reducing Scope 1 + 2 by 25% by 2030 from a base year 2020, which translates into the estimated reduction of -906 Kt per annum over the period of FY2023 - FY2030. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.

CRH also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. CRH commits to reduce gross scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 33.5% per tonne of cementitious product by 2030 from a 2021 base year*. CRH also commits to reduce absolute gross scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from other activities 42.0% by 2030 from a 2021 base year*. CRH further commits to reduce gross scope 3 GHG emissions 23.5% from purchased clinker and cement per tonne purchased over the same timeframe. *The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
